Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) are automatic tracking systems currently used on all ships and Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) to identify and locate vessels. These devices operate by electronically exchanging data with other nearby vessels and AIS base stations. When combined with satellite and radar information, they provide significant assistance in collision avoidance.
AIS, which allows you to see the location, tracking, current course and speed of other AIS users, and provides them with your information in real time, is considered by many to be the most important advance in navigational safety since the introduction of radar.
